My class were studying a topic on the organisation of sport in the UK and were struggling to get to grips with all of the various organisational bodies and their roles. I therefore decided to have an interim revision session with a difference and used speed dating as the vehicle for this. I created seven questions based on what they had already learnt. As each student came into the class, they were given one question each. They were asked to sit at a table with others who had the same question. There are 24 in the group so roughly 3 students per question. After the 5 minutes were up, the speed dating began. Each student had to move around the room and meet with another student but not one who also had the same question as them. They then had 2 minutes in which to state their question and give the answer which was then reciprocated by their partner.

Students would do the first step for simplifying the new expression in front of them and then pass it again.
We continued doing a step and passing papers. The last person checked the work and wrote a new problem. We did this for 3 rounds.

Sunday, September 11, Significant Figures Speed Dating Activity My physical science students are currently working on determining the correct number of significant figures to use in different situations. The first step is for them to be able to recognize how many significant figures there are in a number. I made posters to hang up in my classroom for them and me! I decided this was the perfect topic to make into a speed dating activity. You can find the files for my significant figures posters here.
To create cards for the speed dating activity, I typed up 20 numbers into a Publisher file. I tried to include numbers written in scientific notation and numbers written in standard form. Then, I designed the file to print the correct number of significant figures on the back of the card when printed double sided.

Student tutors are the key to the success of this activity. Each student will need their own card. So I was going to just make a double set of copies of these 16 problems. You may also want to have whiteboards and markers available for student work unless you want to collect and analyze their work. They eventually got them into two rows, facing each other. I told the class that they would be speed dating this morning, which caused a few raised eyebrows. Then I said factoring speed dating. I gave each student a piece of paper half of an 8. Their first job was to factor that, below the fold line. They also had to check their work by expanding and simplifying their answer. They were now each the expert on factoring their quadratic.
Once everyone was ready and I took care of the one quadratic that didn’t factor – oops they got ready. They each factored the quadratic opposite them.
How Can We Improve Math Test Review?
There is so much value, depth, and humanity in this slim, free book by the National Academies Press that any time anybody wants to talk about it at all, I say let’s mark that as a win in the ‘Wins’ column. I don’t claim to be the definitive voice in any of this. I’m just taking this opportunity to document and share my practices in using their model because I believe that understanding this framework can go a long way toward helping teachers make good instructional decisions that can help their students to learn and thrive.
The goal here is to help students bring their new ideas and knowledge into clearer focus so that they can reach the next level. As with all good models, there is a lot of fluidity and variation in each stage, depending on how the teacher “reads” the learners in her classroom.
Simplifying Radicals Speed Dating Over on my own blog, I described a card game I saw in a classroom recently. It is for students to practice converting from mixed radicals to entire radicals and vice versa.
