Historical Description Direct link to this description Southampton is very advantageously situated, on the margin of the extensive bay called Southampton Water, formed by the union of the Teste and the Itchin rivers, at least a mile in width opposite the town. This place is of considerable antiquity, most probably rising out of the ruins of the Roman Clausentum, at Bittern.

There is very little doubt but that the name of this. The earliest notice of Southampton, in history, informs us that in the year it was ravaged by the Danish invaders, who landed here from thirty-three ships; they were, however, at length repulsed and driven from the coast. In the year they again landed, and committed great destruction; and about twelve years afterwards visited the town a third time, plundering and destroying it with fire and sword.

It is not exactly known whether there were any fortifications here previous to these misfortunes; it is rather supposed that the castle built here by the Saxons was subsequent to the Danish invasions. When Canute the Great obtained the British sceptre, it appears that he made Southampton his occasional residence. It was at this place that he so memorably repulsed the gross flattery of his courtiers.

History[ edit ] Petersfield Heath’s burial mounds may be up to 4, years old; their distribution is mainly to the east and south east of the Heath. These are considered to be one of the more important lowland barrow groups in this country. The barrows indicate that the area of the Heath was occupied by people who may have come to regard this area as sacred to their religion.

As yet no trace has been confirmed for the dwellings of these people as the structures would have been wooden [3] but Petersfield Museum hosts a community project to throw more light on this period of history. In King Henry V granted the burgesses of Petersfield freedom from toll, stallage, picage, pannage, murage, and pontage throughout the realm of England.

All charters are preserved in the archive files at Petersfield Town Council. The town grew in prosperity due to its position on frequently travelled routes, local sheep farming, and cottage industries including leather and cloth.

The earliest evidence of human existence is from the later Bronze Age about BC. The name Ropley is probably Anglo-Saxon, the meaning uncertain. Throughout these centuries it must have been largely self supporting, with transport mostly by foot, by horse or horse drawn carriage for those who could afford it. The village was noted for its fine flowers, which with the soil suitable for horticulture produced a flourishing bee keeping industry. Honey was used for the production of mead in Saxon and medieval times and William the Conqueror is said to have obtained his honey from Ropley.

There used to be several ponds at the Dean, Chase Farm in Gilbert Street, Andrews Lane, and the top of Church Street, which is the only one remaining in the village centre.
