Semi-dome — A semi-dome, also called a half-dome, is the term in architecture for half a dome, used to cover a semi-circular area. Semi-domes are a feature of apses in Ancient Roman and traditional church architecture. Islamic examples may use muqarnas decorative corbelling, while in Late Antique, Byzantine and medieval architecture the semi-dome is the classic location for a focal mosaic. In buildings like Hagia Sophia in Byzantine architecture, apsidal openings or exhedras from the central nave appear in several directions, the tetraconch, triconch and cross-in-square are other typically Eastern Christian church plans that produce several semi-domes. The buildings of Mimar Sinan and his pupil Sedefkar Mehmed Agha are the masterpieces of this style, mihrabs are another common location for semi-domes. In Western Europe the external appearance of a semi-dome is less often exploited than in Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal in Cincinnati, OH features the largest semi-dome in the western hemisphere, measuring feet wide and feet high. The imposing brick structure was erected at the beginning of 6th century by order of Bishop Ursicinus and it was certainly located next to a Christian cemetery, and quite possibly on top of a pre-existing pagan one, as some of the ancient tombstones were re-used in its construction. The narthex and building to the right of the entry are later additions, the church is on a nave and two aisles.

Lush dense odours of grass passed over the level of the fields. I brushed away the dust of the railway carriage, and joyfully inhaled the pure air. My travelling-bag — filled by my housekeeper wit linen and various small toilet articles, munditiis, seemed so light in my hand that I swung it about just as a schoolboy swings his strapped package of rudimentary books when the class is let out. Would to Heaven that I were again a little urchin at school!

The rank of these institutions is higher or lower from an educational point of view according as more or less prominence is given to literature and music as compared with industrial or manual training. In the leading schools the literary department embraces kindergarten, primary, secondary, and, in a few instances, collegiate education ; the department of music embraces primary, secondary, and collegiate education ; while the industrial department embraces the teaching of handicrafts, varying in kind according to age, sex, and country.
The courses of study in the literary department are generally the same as those pursued in the public high schools of the respective countries. The work in the department of music varies from instruction in the mere elements of music to thoroughly organized courses of study and highly specialized instruction in the science and art of music. In the industrial department the chief trades are: In the experimental stages of education, there was a tendency in almost all the schools for the blind to make the industrial department the most prominent feature.
Of late years, however, a marked change has been wrought in the ideals pursued in the education of the blind. Owing to the increase of general intelligence, on the one hand, and the steady decrease in value of manual labour, on the other hand, educators of the blind have come to realize that it is not technical skill, or ability to work successfully at one or more of the usual trades, but only a broad and liberal scheme of education that will release the blind from the bondage of dependence, uplift them as a class, and raise them to a level of usefulness and independence.
In consequence of the extensive employment of machinery in almost every department of human activity, there has sprung up among educators of the blind a growing conviction that the only field in which the sightless can hope in the future to compete successfully with the seeing is a field of thought where the intellect can have free play and where blindness will be no hindrance to advancement and success.
The blind need, therefore, at least as good an education as the seeing. The question as to whether they are capable and entitled to such an education has not been settled in the same manner in all countries. In many of the European institutions the prevailing idea is that, as a class, the blind must necessarily remain at the foot of the social scale, forever dependent upon the more fortunate classes, and that what is done for them is rather in the spirit of favour and charity than as of strict obligation.

The genuine loyalty in the Catholic Faith which seems to have marked the career of this eccentric and unfortunate genius is indicated by the second name which appears in a signature of his preserved in Harleian manuscript at the British Museum — “Edmundus Maria Boltonus”. The same manuscript furnishes us with a clue to sundry details of his life. He seems to have been born of Catholic parents in Leicestershire, and must have been of good family and position, for he claims to have continued “many years on his own charge a free commoner at Trinity Hall, Cambridge”, and after going to London to study law to have lived there “in the, best and choicest company of gentlemen”.
There can be no doubt that there was a strong Catholic element among the lawyers of the Inner Temple Richard Southwell, the father of the martyr, might be named as one example among many , and the tone of the drama and much of the lighter literature of the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean period shows that the Bohemian society into which Bolton and his fellows were thrown was often pronouncedly papist.
But while many who for a while were Romanizers, like his friend Ben Jonson, ultimately fell away, Bolton, much to his credit, remained stanch to his principles. Of his ability and zeal in the pursuit of knowledge there can be no question. He was the friend of Cotton and Camden; whose antiquarian researches he shared, and as a writer of verses he was associated with Sidney, Spenser, Raleigh, and others in the publication of “England’s Helicon”.
Many influential friends, including for example the Duke, then Marquess, of Buckingham, tried to help him in his pecuniary embarrassments, but there seems no doubt that his Catholicism stood in the way of his making a living by literature. For instance, a life of King Henry II which he had prepared for an edition of Speed’s “Chronicle’ then in course of publication, was rejected on account of the too favourable aspect in which he had depicted St.
In this form, it is more common in the Lowlands, but it is widespread in Scotland in different forms. In the Highlands, it was rendered as MacAndrew, of medieval Scottish origin. There are a number of suggested origins for William but research points to the Normans in Italy.
